Dirtbag Film Festival – taking enties
June 9th, 2010 by dieselcruiserheadBusy living life, not recording it.. (doh!) — Getting Ready for The Burn!
August 28th, 2009 by dieselcruiserhead
It’s official, we’re going to have a camp at Burning Man called Hazard Assembly. Above is our sign when we were blasting it out with a plasma cutter yesterday afternoon (check out the album here!). We’re tentatively going to be at 3:30 and Genome and if not there, they will be a sign and look for the massive 50 foot flag pole with a yellow flag with a black dot in the middle within a block or two!
The Longest Way, 1.0
August 6th, 2009 by dieselcruiserheadI came across this from a friend on Facebook (thanks Bill!)… Very neat synopsis of a guy travelling by foot from China to Germany — as told by a video of his beard. Enjoy!

Correspondence from the Dirtbag Film & Photo Fest
June 30th, 2009 by AdminWe’ve been pretty psyched at the little tidbits of support that we’re getting all over the place about our new little community for dirtbag adventuring. We started sending some emails and little phone calls here and there and it’s funny, because “dirtbag” either connects or doesn’t. And that’s fine, hey you’re either sorta a stinky musty dirtbag, or not, and that’s OK. But those who ‘dirtbag’ connects with seem really psyched on the idea, as if our little idea of a community is a long lost destination; a place where people with soul can come together and spew misc phrases of primarily BS…
And the good news is we’re pretty impressed with the ‘dirtbags’ that have come out of the woodwork to start participating here, we only have about 46 members so far but since our launch we’ve gotten over 20,000 page loads (that’s right — over 20,000 page loads!), and that’s killer… So people are definitely checking us out. The next step for us, I believe, is starting to create some really killer content, aka unbelievable trip reports… If you’re one of the dirtbags community members (or you’re looking to be) I’m hoping I can talk you into starting to post some of your own off the wall trip reports…
I’ve started by posting some old, great stories, until I come up with the time to start writing up some of the recent adventures I’ve taken this spring including visiting the Beemerchef, which was awesome… These photos are: 1) The first night after an epic 12 hour trip through central Utah on dirt roads, finally meeting Ara Guregian aka The Beemerchef, 2) His unreal location and my ratty old Toyota pickup towing a new old 1966 Military Trailer I’d built up into a little mobile camping unit, and finally 3) Ara’s setup which is his ‘96 1100cc BMW with a sidecar that his dog rides in… Complete with “doggles” and all…
Related to our support, I’ve gotten some killer emails from Bruce Kirby and Kevin Shepit, who together run the Dirtbag Film and Photo Fest previously mentioned in earlier posts… I don’t know much about Kevin other than he’s up in British Columbia. Bruce hosts a TV show on Canadian Broadcasting Company called No Opportunity Wasted which is sorta about the dirtbag lifestyle. Here’s the tidbit on it:
NOW is more than a TV show. It is a philosophy and way of approaching life. NOW means living each day as if it were your last. What would you do if nothing held you back; no fears, excuses, routine, habit, lack of time? Think of the wonderous experiences wait outside your door. NOW is about ditching the excuses, reaching out to friends, helping others, and along the way, fronting up to the things that scare you most. And finally move past them, once and for all.
I’m pretty pumped as these guys have been really supportive. Bruce, in typical adventure fashion, is away on expeditions nearly all summer. ((Surfing June 5 – 18; Solo sea kayak June 19 – July 11th, Raft guiding in Yukon July 12th – Aug 1st, France mid Aug – mid Sept.))… We’re pretty pumped because he’ll be joining our emerging blogger community when he gets back!
Here is an email from Kevin talking all about the ‘08 Festival and the sweetness of increasing dirtbagacity…. Awesome…
It’s really great to see the Dirtbag culture keeping alive…
Yah, we’re really stoked that a festival named “Dirtbag Fest” has really taken off despite much negative warnings. Here’s some behind the scenes pix from last year’s fest. What started out as us hoping to get 100 folks to come ended up as two nights sold to capacity (517) and people trying to sneak in, and that’s just in our town of 6500 people! Something to be said about people wanting to chase time instead of money I think!(the mascot is our town mascot, the German, leiderhosen wearing, beer drinking, accordion playing, mustache toting fella named “Happy Hans.”) Cheers,Kevin

More gear for the free gear giveaway
June 12th, 2009 by dieselcruiserheadOur friends over at Powderwhore, the telemark ski movies, have thrown some donations into our gear giveaway! They’ve thrown in 1 copy of their 2008 telemark ski movie The Pact, and 1 copy of their new 2009-2010 ski movie “Flakes” that will be out in October. My thought is give them away to hopefully one lucky telemarker…
To enter the contest, add a post to this thread. If you’re not a member then you’ll have to register first…
More more info on the Powderwhores and their sick ski movies click this banner below to check out their site and blog! Also we’re going to throw their blog into our blog feeder in the forums…
What is a Dirtbag?
June 11th, 2009 by AdminBig thanks to Bruce Kirkby, of the Canadian adventure television show on CBC, No Opportunity Wasted. Bruce is also one of the founders of the Kootenay Dirtbag Film Festival. We’ve posted an abbreviated, 30 second version of the trailer below but we really really recommend checking out the full 3 minute trailer on their site www.dirtbagfest.com, which is the first video when scrolling down. It is that good. Most importantly, I think the clip does a really killer job of explaining what exactly a dirtbag is, particularly in the sense of this community, to the point where I think we’re going to embed it somewhere on this site permanently!
And again, the link to the full length 3 minute video is www.dirtbagfest.com under “dirtbag trailer” and stay tuned for information about the Kootenay Film Festival here on the Hazard Assembly as it comes through! Thank you again Bruce!
Cheers,
Andre (principle Hazard Assembly puppet master)
Official Site Launch & Free Gear Contest!
June 10th, 2009 by AdminHi guys,
To celebrate the official launch of Hazard Assembly we’re doing a free gear giveaway for a week to anyone who posts in to this thread in our community.
We wanted to say big thanks to the donors, GearX.com and the Desert Rocks Music Festival in Moab, Utah.
Welcome to the Hazard Assembly and check out our mojo and the stuff going on in our community. We think we’ll assemble a pretty neat group of interesting people doing all sorts of interesting stuff to celebrate the idea & mojo of this place, “Dirtbag Adventuring,” so feel free to tune in!
Thanks and welcome!

24 Hours of Lemons – Holy Smokerooos!!
May 29th, 2009 by Admin24 Hours of Lemons may possibly be the latest Hazard Assembly obsession and our first real sponsorship/project etc! We started checking it out a couple days ago, it got in our heads, and at least for me (“dieselcruiserhead” aka Andre Shoumatoff) — the idea hasn’t left, for days now… Hell, we even spoke to the organizers this morning about bringing an event to Utah. The conclusion: they have us looking for a race track!
First, check out this documentary. If you know or like anything about cars then you will really like this. The documentary is only about 20 minutes long and at about 5-8 minutes long it starts getting really really good. Check out how crazy and quirk this whole race/event/idea is…
In true eco-friendly fashion, combined with the dirtbag aspects of this, this is 100% right up our alley… The humor, the welding, the idea of using a diesel and running it on biodiesel, you name it, it all goes together…
Here’s what’s in the works for us. First, we have a wrecked Mercedes 300D turbo sedan. It only has about 129K miles on it (which is nothing for a Benz – every other one I’ve sold, running great, with over 300K miles!). Here is a photo of my last one – looks pretty good uh! 340K miles in this picture…

And here is the wrecked 300D I recently acquired…. No the Land Rover and the ‘58 Chevy Apache are not for sale… (well maybe the Land Rover. It is really pretty slick and customized with a ‘98 GM Vortec V6 from a S-10 Blazer. This old Rover goes 90 and gets 22 mpg)…
And then finally, there is an older, rare version of the old 123 body style (300Ds, etc) called a 240D which is a slow-as-a-snail, non-turbo charged 4 cylinder diesel with something like 90 horsepower:

The good news thought is almost all of these old 240ds have manual transmissions, and the 5 cyl turbos and the 4 cyl engines interchange with each other. They are also nicely stripped down with none of the “refinements” (and less weight) of the 300Ds). So — I can bolt the 5 cyl turbo into hopefully a babied, but rusty and ugly-as-sin hardly used old 240D (if I can find one, hehem Ken!), add some water/methanol injection for next to nothing, and even run it on pure biodiesel we’ll make ourselves. So, this race car will run on biodiesel, water, and a little methanol. Pretty killer uh!
Now, if you ganced over the documentary make sure you watch it…
Here are some links that are just too funny…

http://jalopnik.com/5199325/the-mob-has-spoken-the-superkak-racing-mustang-gt-must-die
Could this be in the works?? Could this be the first official sponsorship and/or project of the Hazard Assembly???
Wonderful coverage from the Beemer Chef on Desert Rocks….
May 29th, 2009 by AdminOur resident contributor Ara Gureghian, the Beemer Chef, has put up some absolutely killer updates to his site The Oasis of My Soul about the Desert Rocks event. And what an event it was, stay tuned for some full coverage on it shortly including the crazy, epic flash flooding that occured and as always, music until dawn…
Take a look at his coverage here.
And check out some of his usual, unbelievable photography. Ara is now in Colorado documenting his life on the road. Pretty neat…
